Tour to Goderdzi

A two-day tour to Goderdzi with PVD Club is not just a trip. These are emotions that will stay with you for a long time. Let's figure out what awaits you and why this adventure is worth your time.

The Rabat Fortress is a vast complex that includes several key elements.

  • Defensive structures: High walls and towers built to protect against enemies still impress with their power.
  • Religious sites: Inside the fortress there are Orthodox churches and a mosque, reflecting the multinational past of the region.
  • Palace complexes and baths: These structures show the influence of Ottoman and Persian architecture, especially noticeable in the ornamentation and layout.
  • Museums: Exhibits inside the fortress tell the history of Akhaltsikhe and the region, including artifacts from different eras.

The restoration preserved the historical authenticity, but added amenities for tourists, such as viewing platforms and information stands. Walking around the fortress, you seem to be transported to different eras, feeling the breath of history.

Day one: Goderdzi Pass and Rabat Fortress

Our journey begins with a trip to the Goderdzi Pass, a place where Georgia's nature unfolds in all its glory. Situated at the junction of Adjara and Samtskhe-Javakheti, this pass enchants with alpine meadows and panoramic views that take your breath away.

After a walk along the pass, our path will continue to the Rabat fortress - a unique historical complex that occupies seven hectares. These are not just ancient walls, but a real cultural center where the traditions of different peoples are intertwined. The fortress is waiting for you.

  • Church, mosque and synagogue symbolizing unity and harmony.
  • Viewing platforms with stunning views of the surrounding area.
  • A historical museum where you can learn about the region's rich past.
  • Cozy souvenir shops and even a registry office for those who dream of a romantic ceremony.

After a busy day, you will go to a comfortable hotel where you can relax under the starry sky. A night in the mountains will give you silence and anticipation of new discoveries.

What makes the fortress unique?

Founded in the 9th century, Rabati Fortress initially served to protect the southern borders of the Georgian Kingdom. However, it acquired its modern appearance in the 12th–13th centuries. During its long history, the fortress changed hands several times: from Georgian kings to the Ottomans, Persians, and the Russian Empire. Each dominion left its mark on the architecture and functionality of the complex, making it a unique example of cultural synthesis.

In 2011–2012, the fortress underwent a large-scale restoration, which returned it to its former glory. Today, it is one of the best-preserved historical sites in Georgia, where ancient walls harmoniously combine with modern technologies.

Day 2: Green Lake and Pass Walks

The second day begins with a return to the Goderdzi Pass, where you can delve deeper into its natural magic. The main goal of this day is a walk to the Green Lake, which is not in vain called the mystery of Goderdzi.

Green Lake is a place that captivates at first sight. Its unusual hue is due to its volcanic origin and the minerals dissolved in the water. Among the features of the lake.

  • Cold but crystal clear water that you can drink without any fear.
  • The absence of living creatures gives the lake a mystical atmosphere.
  • The bottom is strewn with sharp boulders, which makes it even more unique.

A walk to the lake will give you not only the opportunity to take amazing photos, but also a chance to enjoy the silence and solitude. This place is ideal for those who want to switch off from the hustle and bustle for a while and feel connected to nature.

The Mystery of Unfreezing Water

One of the most amazing features of the Green Lake is that it does not freeze even at temperatures of -10…-20 °C, typical for the Alpine zone in winter. Scientists still cannot give an exact explanation for this phenomenon, since the lake is not fed by hot springs, and the water remains cold even in summer. This mystery gives the place a special attraction, making tourists return here again and again.

Green Lake is an ideal place for nature lovers and active recreation.

  • The road to the lake passes through picturesque mountain trails, which will delight trekking enthusiasts.
  • Take a tent and stay overnight to enjoy the silence and starry sky.
  • Panoramic views and unusual water colors are the perfect backdrop for landscape shots and selfies.

Nearby is the Beshumi balneological resort, where you can restore your strength and enjoy the healing mountain air.
