HIKING IN THE MOUNTAINS
TUSHETI KHADORI

A HIKING TO KHADORI – THE TOWERS AND GORGES OF MOUNTAIN TUSHETIA

Imagine: a dense forest where every step echoes with silence, trails winding between centuries-old trees, sudden emergences into open meadows with breathtaking views of snow-capped peaks. And all around, the amazing culture of the Kists (Chechens of Georgia), whose ancestors lived in these gorges for centuries, preserving traditions, hospitality, and a special atmosphere.

This isn't just a hike. It's a journey at the intersection of two worlds: the mysterious Pankisi Gorge and the wild, almost cosmic beauty of Tusheti . We also offer a week-long tour to Tusheti.

Hiking program in Tusheti

Early departure from Tbilisi → transfer to Pankisi → trek start

We're immersed in one of Georgia's most atmospheric and unusual routes. The trail leads through dense, primeval forest, filled with the scent of moss, ferns, and damp earth. Then the forest opens up, and we emerge into steppe clearings with panoramic views of ridges and distant peaks.

Route: ~10 km, elevation gain ≈ 600 m, medium difficulty (suitable for most people in good physical condition).

In the middle of the day, there's a long break: hot tea from a thermos, delicious sandwiches, homemade khachapuri, nuts, dried fruit, and chocolate. We catch our breath, enjoy the silence and the views, and take photos against the backdrop of endless mountains.

By evening we reach our overnight stop:

  • Option A - Romance under the starsWe pitch tents in a picturesque clearing overlooking the gorge (all equipment, including warm sleeping bags and mats, is provided)
  • Option B - comfortWe'll be staying at an authentic Kistin guesthouse (cozy rooms, hot showers, home-cooked meals, wine, and homemade chacha).

An evening by the campfire (or on the veranda): guides' stories, Kistin songs accompanied by a guitar, a starry sky so bright you feel like you can touch it. Don't delay—come on a journey to Tusheti with us.

Tusheti – an Alpine fairy tale and the power of the Caucasus

We wake up at dawn among the mountains → breakfast → we set off on the second leg of the route

Today we'll have a real hike in Tusheti : alpine meadows strewn with flowers, birch groves, turbulent mountain rivers, and breathtaking views. The trail is more open, with constant panoramic views of the Main Caucasus Range.

Distance: 8–12 km (depending on the chosen option), moderate altitude gain/loss.

On the way:

  • stunning viewpoints
  • the opportunity to see wild horses and flocks of sheep
  • swimming in an icy mountain river (optional)
  • picnic lunch in nature

By 16:00–18:00 we return to the cars → transfer to Tbilisi (arrival in the evening).

Night views that will remain in your memory forever.

Questions and Answers about the Khadori Hike

Is the Hadori route suitable for beginners?

Yes, with a caveat. The route is of medium difficulty: about 10 km on the first day with an elevation gain of approximately 600 m. If you're generally active—you exercise and walk a lot—the hike will be comfortable. No special training or mountain hiking experience is required. If in doubt, please contact us, and we'll give you an honest assessment of the route based on your fitness level.

What time of year is best for hiking in Tusheti?

Hiking in Khadori and the Pankisi Gorge is available from May to October. July and August are peak season: warm, everything is in bloom, and daylight hours are at their peak. June can still have cool nights, but there are fewer crowds. September is the golden season: the forest changes color, the air is clear, and the views are fantastic.

What to take with you on a hike?

A minimum list: trekking boots (must be broken in), layers of clothing (mornings and evenings in the mountains are cool even in summer), a raincoat or light windbreaker, sunscreen, a hat, and personal medications. We provide a sleeping bag, mat, and camping gear. If you don't have trekking poles, you can rent equipment.

How to choose: a 1-day or 2-day hike?

The one-day option is for those with limited time or wanting to "test the waters" first. The two-day option is for those who want to truly immerse themselves in the atmosphere: spend the night in the mountains, watch the sunrise over the ridge, and take a second route with different views. Most people who choose the two-day option say it was the best decision.
