Ski touring in Kazbegi
Why freeriding in Kazbegi is a special experience
Hello, fellow skiers! If you, like me, are tired of overcrowded resorts and are looking for a true mountain adventure, then you've come to the right place. Today I want to tell you about one of the most spectacular freeride destinations in Kazbegi – an expedition to the Gergeti Glacier.
Imagine: you're climbing through endless snowfields, surrounded by majestic volcanic peaks, and below lies a valley dotted with ancient Georgian villages. It's not just skiing—it's a true journey into the heart of the Caucasus. I was there myself last spring, and I still remember the experience with warmth.
Ski touring in Kazbegi is not for beginners, but if you already have off-piste experience and are ready for a real challenge, this route will become one of the most vivid memories of your life.
What is the Ortsveri expedition and why is it unique?
Ortsveri isn't just a peak, but an entire mountain range above Stepantsminda and the Gergeti Glacier. When I first saw these slopes, I knew: this is it, the very place every Kazbek freerider dreams of.
5 reasons why this program is special:
1. True acclimatization – unlike many commercial programs, there's no rush. Your body gradually adapts to the altitude, making the climb more comfortable and safer.
2. Comfort in harsh conditions—this isn't a budget-friendly "dash" from the valley to the summit and back. The program includes organized transfers, comfortable accommodations in Stepantsminda, and a well-planned route to the highlands.
3. Glacier training – Ortsveri is an ideal place to practice glacier navigation, rope handling, and decision-making in challenging mountain conditions.
4. Flexible strategy – "In the Caucasus Mountains, conditions dictate the rules." The route adapts to the weather, snow conditions, and the group's capabilities.
5. A reserve day is not a luxury, but a necessity. An extra day allows you to adjust to the vagaries of the weather and increases the chances of an expedition's success.
6-DAY PROGRAM (COMFORT)

Day 1: Getting to Know Georgia and Getting Ready
Your adventure begins in Tbilisi, one of the most atmospheric cities I've ever visited. After meeting your team and checking your gear, you'll head along the Georgian Military Highway to Stepantsminda. The road itself is a sight to behold: picturesque gorges, ancient fortresses, and endless mountain vistas.
Local tip: Be sure to try khachapuri at one of the roadside cafes—they're especially delicious here!
In the evening, a detailed briefing and equipment preparation will await you at the guesthouse. Don't worry if you forgot anything—experienced guides will help you find everything.

Day 2: First acquaintance with the mountains
After breakfast, you'll head to the trailhead at Gergeti or Sameba. This is the moment when civilization is left behind, and the real ski touring in Kazbegi begins.
The first few climbs are an adaptation period. You'll learn:
— Move efficiently with a backpack
— Control the pace at altitude
— It’s important to dress in layers (in the mountains the temperature changes every 100 meters!)
My experience: On the first day, I slightly overestimated my strength, but the guides adjusted the pace in time. The main thing is to listen to your body and take your time.

Day 3: Exit to the high mountain zone
Day three is the transition to the real expedition zone. You'll ascend to a weather station or high camp in the Betlemi area. After setting up camp, you'll have practical safety training:
— Moving in a roped group on a glacier
— Working with an ice axe and crampons
— Checking avalanche transceivers
Insider tip: In the evening, weather permitting, step outside your tent and gaze at the stars. At this altitude, the sky looks completely different—it's a sight you'll remember forever.

Day 4: The main day – climbing Ortsveri
This is the day we've all been working towards! Rise early, check your gear, and hit the road. Depending on the conditions, your goal could be:
— Ortsveri Pass
— The upper part of the glacier
— North Col
- One of the peaks of the massif
The climb takes several hours, but every minute is worth it. When you reach the highest point and see the panorama of the Central Caucasus… words cannot describe it. And then comes the long, unforgettable descent through perfect spring snow.
What I remember most: The moment when, after hours of climbing, we finally unclipped our bindings and raced down an endless snowfield. The feeling of freedom and exhilaration was priceless.

Day 5: Reserve Day – Flexibility as an Advantage
This day is one of the program's strong points. If yesterday's weather was perfect, today you can:
- Head to the second ski target
— Arrange a photo shoot in the most picturesque places
- Go down to the valley calmly
If the weather isn't ideal, this day becomes your best chance to conquer the summit. As the saying goes, a spare parachute is always a good idea!

Day 6: Return to Civilization
After descending into the valley and transferring to Tbilisi, you'll have time to reflect on your experience. In the evening, over a traditional Georgian dinner (be sure to try the chashushuli!), you can share your impressions with the team and get recommendations for future hikes.
