Skitouring Adventure in Svaneti
Svaneti Skitour
Skitouring in Svaneti is built for those who live for real adventure and raw mountain beauty. Few places on Earth combine 4000–5000 m glaciated giants (Ushba, Shkhara, Tetnuldi) with medieval stone towers, deep Georgian culture, and some of the lightest, deepest powder in Europe.
Snow starts in November and often stays until May, with regular meter-plus dumps. Short transfers, high-altitude huts, and endless open bowls make every day epic yet accessible. Expect big verticals, untouched lines, star-filled nights at 2400 m, and the unique feeling that you're riding through a living postcard where time stopped centuries ago. Pure magic.

Day 1 – Travel to Mestia & Acclimatization The adventure begins with an early-morning pick-up in Tbilisi (usually around 06:00–07:00, depending on group size and traffic). The scenic 7–8 hour drive winds through the dramatic Georgian Military Highway and the breathtaking Zhinvali reservoir, then climbs into the heart of Svaneti. Expect a few short photo stops along the way, especially at the stunning Ananuri fortress overlooking the turquoise lake. Arrival in Mestia is scheduled for approximately 16:00. After checking into the comfortable guesthouse in the center of town, there will be time to stretch your legs and breathe the crisp mountain air. At 18:30–19:00 the whole group gathers for a detailed briefing: route overview, weather forecast analysis, avalanche conditions, equipment check, and specifics of the mountain overnight (sleeping arrangements, hut facilities, what to pack in the backpack versus what stays in Mestia). After the briefing, a relaxed evening walk through historic Mestia introduces the famous defensive towers, UNESCO-listed stone houses, and the unique atmosphere of Upper Svaneti. Dinner at a local family restaurant features signature Svan dishes: kubdari (meat-filled bread), fresh cheese, and local honey. Overnight in cozy rooms with all amenities.
Day 2 – First Taste of Svaneti Powder & Group Calibration Breakfast at 08:00, followed by final gear adjustments. A short transfer brings the group to the Hatsvali cable car. The lift takes everyone quickly to around 2000 m, saving energy for the real fun. From the top station, skins go on and the first proper skitour day begins. The plan is 2–3 moderate ascents (200–400 m vertical each) with glorious descents through open alpine bowls and light larch forest. This day serves two purposes: enjoying fantastic Svaneti powder and allowing guides to assess everyone's fitness, skinning technique, and skiing ability in variable snow. Lunch is eaten on the snow - hot tea from thermoses and energy-packed snacks. In the late afternoon the group returns to Mestia via the cable car or a final fun descent to the village. Evening is dedicated to finalizing the exact line for the next two days with overnight in the mountains, packing overnight gear (sleeping bag, hut shoes, headlamp, etc.), and an early bedtime. Dinner and overnight in Mestia.
Day 3 – Into the Heart of the Range: Ascent & Mountain Hut Alarm clocks ring early — usually 06:00–06:30. Quick breakfast, then a 30–40 minute 4×4 transfer toward the pass that opens access to the high alpine zone. By 09:00 skins are on and the climb begins. The route roughly gains 800–1000 vertical meters over 4–5 hours at a comfortable touring pace, traversing beautiful slopes with ever-expanding views of Ushba, Tetnuldi, and the entire Svaneti range. Breaks are taken as needed, with hot drinks and snacks. Upon reaching the high col at around 2400 m, the group arrives at the cozy mountain hut. Backpacks are dropped, boots changed to hut shoes, and after a quick refuel everyone heads out for a light, skin-free sunset hike to the nearest ridge for panoramic photos and to scout tomorrow's descent lines. Dinner is prepared together or served by the hut keeper — hearty mountain food and plenty of tea. Stories are shared around the wood stove before an early night in warm sleeping bags. Overnight at 2400 m under the clearest starry sky imaginable.
Day 4 – Summit Push, Epic Descents & Return Another alpine start (around 06:30–07:00) to catch the best snow conditions. After a solid breakfast, the final ascent begins towards 2900–3100 m, depending on conditions and group strength (usually 2.5–3.5 hours of skinning). At the top, skins come off, transitions are made, and the reward arrives: 2–3 long, untouched descents of 800–1200 vertical meters each through open faces, playful pillows, and perfectly spaced trees. These are the signature Svaneti lines most people dream about. After the final run, the group returns to the hut, collects overnight gear, and begins the relaxed descent back to civilization—often a mix of skiing and short skin sections down to the road head. A waiting 4×4 transfers everyone to Mestia for a quick lunch or coffee, followed by the scenic drive back to Tbilisi (arrival usually between 20:00 and 22:00, depending on road conditions and photo stops). The trip ends with tired legs, full memory cards, and the quiet satisfaction of having experienced one of the most beautiful skitouring destinations on the planet.
Reviews from our clients about the tour to Gudauri
Nikita ChesnokovAny trip with PVD was a true adventure to remember for me! I've had 4 of them already, including one 1-week hiking trip, and really looking forward for more in the future.
Sergey FGreat guys. I've been to a lot of places with them over the past two years: Juta, Lake Abudelauri, Lake Udziro, Tusheti, and ascents of Ortsveri and Kazbek.
Ivan SemerA good and convenient service for renting camping equipment. Thank you, I'll be using you again.
Alexey AzarovAn excellent tour operator for various tours in Georgia and beyond. I've traveled with them several times to Gudauri, Bakhmaro, and Tusheti, and each time I got more than I expected. The organizers are friendly but not pushy, ready to help with any difficulties, offer advice, support, and join in on fun projects. They're also willing to accommodate any unusual requests, like renting equipment and leading a wave ski tour up that mountain. For me, these guys offer the best value for money, and I definitely plan to travel with them again.
Kristina KuzhalI went with the guys to Kazbek – this ascent will remain in my heart forever! Thanks to the guide, Gleb, you're incredible! Everything was clearly organized and coordinated. The atmosphere was friendly and fun, but at the same time, everything regarding safety and time limits was strictly adhered to. And the food! Mmmmm... the cocoa alone at 3653 meters was worth it! We were always well-fed, instructed, and the guide was always there to help and support us. This was my first trip where absolute confidence in the guide and team inspired me personally. It was interesting, exciting, and challenging in places, but absolutely comfortable, calm, safe, and fun. Thank you!
Dmitry DrozdWhen's the next tour, guys? After a successful climb of Kazbek, I definitely need to do a few more! Our guide, Gleb, was very helpful in resolving any issues along the way, clearly defined the weather window for the climb, and our group was the first on the mountain. It's a small thing, but it's important! Anyway, see you there! I'm thrilled with the organization of the tour!
Sergey IodoThank you to your team for an unforgettable climb of Kazbek! Everything was perfectly organized, the guide was super professional, supporting and motivating at every step. We reached the summit and had a ton of incredible experiences!
Yana SavishevaWe traveled with our family and rented a car from these guys. Everything went great: the car was in good condition, and we had no problems. Communication was quick and pleasant. We had only positive experiences. We highly recommend them! :)Showing our latest reviews
