Freeride in Svaneti: Freedom on the Slopes
For those seeking more than a classic ski tour in Svaneti, we offer freeride. This is a tour for true adventure lovers and seekers of freedom.
Preparation
We start with a gear check. It’s essential to have everything: freeride kit (skis or snowboard), beacon, probe, shovel, radio, and backpack. Then we head from Tbilisi to Mestia for dinner and briefing. Here, we’ll discuss routes and safety matters.
Day 2: Hatsvali
The first riding day is at Hatsvali resort. Warm-up runs along the pistes give way to a journey into the dense forest. A 30-minute traverse – and you’ll face perfect freeride slopes. In the evening, we’ll train rescue skills and review off-piste safety basics. On Mount Zuruldi, home to Hatsvali resort, there’s everything for freeride: long forest slopes blanketed in fluffy snow, and clearings that seem made for thrilling descents. The vertical drop here is 450 – 500 meters, with runs up to 3 km long. It’s ideal for those wanting to test themselves in forest freeride. Yes, the trees are dense, but that’s what makes it safe in bad weather – you’ll always have visual markers. Further on are wide clearings where you can jump over snow-covered rocks and logs.
Day 3: Tetnuldi
Day three is at Tetnuldi. Here await vast snow fields and up to 5–6 descents. Each run is a new line, new sensations. Evening route discussions will prep you for the next day. The resort is designed with freeride in mind. All pistes here are blue, perfect for beginners. But once you step beyond the marked runs, endless snow fields open up. Tetnuldi’s specialty is off-piste riding straight from the lifts. One of them, for example, leads toward Zhabeshi with no groomed piste beyond. You descend a wild slope surrounded only by nature. Three glaciers – Lardaad, Nageb, and Tsanner – keep conditions ideal for riding. Even in June, ski-mountaineers find great snow slopes here.
Day 4: Descent to Adishi
This day will stay with you forever. We head to Adishi village, spending the whole day riding immense snow fields. This place feels utterly cut off from civilization – and that’s its charm.
Day 5: Finale
The final tour day is back at Hatsvali. A few hours of riding – and we return to Mestia to head to Tbilisi, filled with the sense of a life fully lived.
