Tusheti – A Week-Long Hike

Tusheti: A Week's Adventure

Tusheti 7-day hike - фото 1

Tusheti is the perfect destination for those craving a genuine mountain adventure in one of Georgia’s most breathtaking and untouched regions. Tucked away in the northeastern part of the country on the slopes of the Greater Caucasus, Tusheti captivates with its ancient history, rich cultural heritage, and dramatic natural beauty. This is a place where majestic alpine landscapes, medieval stone towers, authentic highland villages, traditional Georgian cuisine (including legendary khinkali and local Tushetian cheese), and exceptionally warm hospitality come together to create an unforgettable journey.

The signature feature of any Tusheti tour is the region’s extraordinary architecture. You’ll discover ancient defensive towers and fortified villages such as those in Dartlo, Omalo, and occasionally even the famous Shatili (which technically belongs to neighboring Khevsureti, but many tours combine both regions). These medieval stone structures, built without mortar to withstand invasions, still stand proudly as powerful symbols of the mountaineers’ courage and resilience. Every tower and fortress carries its own legends, history, and unique character — making them perfect subjects for photography and deep historical exploration.

We also offer tours to Svaneti, Goderdzi, Bakhmaro and Gudauri, where you can truly unwind.

Day 2 – Shenako, Diklo & Shavikvishi Peak After a hearty breakfast, we set off to explore the picturesque villages of Shenako and Diklo. We visit another medieval fortress offering spectacular views and enjoy a cozy tea break with homemade sweets inside its ancient walls. Recharged, we begin our trek through beautiful forest trails up to 2,700 m at the foot of Mount Shavikvishi — one of the most breathtaking viewpoints in the entire Caucasus. On days when weather and group energy allow, we climb to the summit (3,200 m) for an even more dramatic panorama.

Day 3 – Iconic Dartlo & Kvavlo Today we visit one of Tusheti’s most recognizable and photogenic villages — Dartlo. The silhouette of its tightly stacked slate towers and houses is one of the region’s most famous postcards. We stroll through narrow stone lanes, where you’re likely to meet the village’s friendly locals: a calm donkey, welcoming dogs, rabbits, and a curious little goat that lives at the top and happily accepts gentle pets. From Dartlo we take an easy and scenic trek to the village of Kvavlo, where ancient monuments are still preserved. Here you can relax in the only café at the top, sipping hot coffee with an incredible mountain backdrop. Overnight in a cozy guesthouse in Dartlo.

Day 4 – Rest & Active Day in Omalo We return to familiar Omalo. Today is a relaxed day dedicated to recovery and freedom. Omalo is surrounded by vast alpine meadows — perfect for quiet time alone with nature, reflection, and recharging. For those who want more action: optional horseback riding, picnic in nature, or simply enjoying the open space and mountain silence.

Day 5 – Lake Oreti – Jewel of the National Park A moderate and very scenic hike to Lake Oreti (2,650 m) — one of the must-visit natural landmarks of Tusheti National Park. This alpine lake is famous for its constantly changing colors: from heavenly turquoise and deep blue to absolute crystal clarity. We enjoy a picnic lunch by the lake with unforgettable views before returning to Omalo.

Day 6 – Bochorna – Europe’s Highest Inhabited Village After breakfast we head to Bochorna — officially Europe’s highest continuously inhabited settlement at 2,345 m. Interesting fact: to maintain this status, someone must live here year-round. That’s why the local doctor who initiated the recognition now stays in the village through the harsh winter months — completely isolated from the outside world, yet providing medical help to the few remaining residents. Along the way and in the village itself you’ll find stunning views and authentic highland architecture that feels like stepping back in time. On the way back we stop at the guesthouse to collect our luggage and begin the scenic descent along the famous serpentine road toward Tbilisi.

Day 7 – Reserve Day A flexible buffer day in case of bad weather, road conditions, or if the group wishes to spend more time in any of the locations visited earlier.

This Tusheti itinerary offers the perfect balance between adventure, cultural immersion, active days, and peaceful moments in one of the most pristine mountain regions on Earth. Ready to experience the real spirit of the Caucasus?
