Winter Svaneti

Why Tetnuld and Hatsvali Are Becoming the New Favorites for Freeride

The mountain ranges of Georgia are increasingly finding their way into the plans of those who seek not just skiing, but a genuine adventure. Svaneti, with its Tetnuld and Hatsvali resorts, attracts riders tired of overcrowded European slopes who want snow that lasts for months and silence unbroken by lift queues.

Two Resorts – Two Different Stories

Tetnuld is a relatively new resort, yet it has already earned a reputation as the place with the highest lift departure point in Georgia – 3165 meters. From here, trails stretch up to 9 km long, alongside vast off-piste fields. The snow cover lasts from November to May, and the surrounding peaks exceed 4800 meters – guaranteeing excellent snow quality even in March and April.

Hatsvali is located closer to Mestia and suits those just starting out with skiing or snowboarding. The slopes are gentler, the trails wider, and the vertical drop is more moderate – around 500 meters. At the same time, the top station offers one of the best views of Mount Ushba and the entire Main Caucasian Ridge.

What Makes Svaneti Special for Freeride

  • Minimal mass tourism. Even during peak season, more than a dozen people on the slopes at once is rare.
  • Huge off-piste areas. From forest glades to high-alpine couloirs – the choice of lines is limited only by skill level.
  • Stable snow cover. The altitude and location provide natural snowfall from December through April.
  • Opportunity to combine riding with culture. Svan towers, local cuisine, and hospitality leave memories as strong as the descents themselves.

Experienced riders choose Tetnuld for long virgin-powder runs and routes toward Zagar Pass. Beginners feel more comfortable starting at Hatsvali, where instructors work and modern rental equipment is available.

How a Typical Five-Day Freeride Tour Works

Programs are built around off-piste skiing with daily avalanche safety assessments. Guides evaluate snow conditions each morning and select the safest lines.

A standard day looks like this:

  • Morning – breakfast featuring Svan cuisine (kubdari, chvishtari, homemade cheese).
  • Transfer or lift to the starting point.
  • 4–6 hours of riding with mountain snacks.
  • Return to the hotel, sauna, dinner by the fireplace.

One day is reserved for a walk around Mestia – visiting the historical museum, Margiani Tower, and the town’s best cafés serving local food.

Accommodation and Details Worth Knowing

The base hotel is a 10-minute walk from the Hatsvali lift. Rooms for 2–4 people come with balconies overlooking the mountains, central heating, and a dedicated drying room for gear. Wi-Fi works reliably – a rarity at this altitude.

Included in the tour price:

  • Three meals a day with emphasis on local cuisine.
  • Daily transfer to Tetnuld (40 minutes).
  • Sauna access.
  • Avalanche equipment (beacon, probe, shovel) when needed.

Freeride ski or snowboard rental is arranged in advance – this ensures the right wide-waist, appropriate-stiffness models are ready.

When to Go and How to Prepare

The best period runs from mid-January to the end of March. That’s when snow depth is maximum and thaws are least likely. April works well for those who enjoy sunshine and long spring-snow descents.

Basic physical fitness and a desire to try something new are enough. Everything else – from avalanche gear to a warm dinner – is handled by the organizers.

Winter Svaneti is a place where the mountains remain in charge and people are only temporary guests. And that, in the end, is its greatest value.
